The summer holiday has just finished and on your English lessons many of you will be asked to describe your holiday.

But do you know how to do that in the right way? Do you know what to say first? How to build your story in order? How to describe the places? And finally, what tenses should be used?

I’ve prepared for you a few tips which can help make your task easy and successful.

Firstly, try just to answer the following questions.

1. Where were you on your last holiday? Where did you go? Who did you go with? How long did you go there for?

See an example:

I was in Spain, I went there with my family. We spent there 10 days.

2. What did you do there? What did you see? What places did you visit?

See an example:

We did some sightseeing, we sunbathed  and we tried Spanish food. We visited Madrid and we saw Costa Blanca Beaches. We tried paella and Spanish potato tortilla.

3. Did you enjoy yourself? Did you have a good time? What did you like and what did you dislike about your holidays?

See an example:

We had a great time in Spain. I liked the weather, people and the sights. The thing I didn’t like much was siesta time.

Secondly, when you already have the simple answers, try now to add some more information, a few adjectives and adverbs.
All that will make your work more interesting and exciting.

My last holiday was in Spain, I went there with my family. We spent there 10 wonderful days. The weather was just great and we could do many things. We did some sightseeing, we sunbathed  and we tried Spanish food. We visited Madrid, it’s a beautiful city. We saw the Plaza Mayor, it’s the main square and it looks amazing, especially at night.
We also saw The Royal Palace, the building is really impressive. Then, we wanted to relax and we sunbathed on one of the Costa Blanca beaches. This place looks like a paradise! Next, we visitied some local restaurants and tried typical Spanish food like paella and potato tortilla. It was delicious! I will never forget this taste.

We had a great time in Spain. I liked the weather, smiling people and the picturesque sights. The thing I didn’t like much was siesta time because many restaurants and cafés are closed at this time! I think I will come to Spain again, there are still so many places to visit.

As you can see such a description is not very difficult. It is always helpful to start with some simple, basic ideas and then add some more information step by step. Use a dictionary to find some interesting words and phrases, it will make your work more attractive. When you describe your last holiday use the Past Simple tense for the activities you did there. You can also use the Present Simple tense when you describe what some buildings or places look like. They always look that way.

I’m sure that if you use all these tips, your task will be a success!

Good luck !!!
